Caffeine Shot: Maison Ikkoku

We’re back, baby!

After more than a month long hiatus from visiting cafes due to the fasting month, we were really looking forward to get on the cafe ride once again. What’s the best way to spend a weekday afternoon while everyone else were working? We head down to Maison Ikkoku for a shot of caffeine!

As we step in the cafe

Pretty cool lighting setup

As we stepped into the cafe, we immediately felt comfortable with their casual but friendly service and cosy ambience. A very nice place to relax with your friends and family we’d say – a place that we would come again. Also, to ease your search for coffee equipment, they do offer a decent range from aeropress to chemex for sale as you dine in with your coffee.

Guess what? They have up to 5 ways to get your speciality coffee fix! Not sure if other cafes offer such a variety to suit your caffeine needs but this cafe is interesting enough to juggle all 5 for you. Unfortunately, they carried a limited number of speciality coffee during our visit: Costa Rica Llana Bonito single origin and one other which I can’t recall. But it’s okay, a nutty Costa Rica Llana Bonito by aeropress, an Iced Caramel Latte and a slice of Mango Madness will do for us!

Aeropressed Coasta Rica Llana Bonito coffee

Aeropressed Coasta Rica Llana Bonito coffee

The Coffee Review:

Aroma: Roasted nuts fragrant, very hearty

Acidity: A decent level of acidity that quickly fades away

Body: In between light and medium-bodied

Flavour: It was highlighted by the staff to be nutty and we do agree to it. Creamy macadamia-like with good amount of oil on the surface. Bitterness was pretty much on the low probably due to the aeropress method

Aftertaste: Hearty and suitable for an after lunch treat.

Overall: 4 / 5

What’s great about this cup was the temperature when it was served. Not pipping hot nor lukewarm. A quick treat on the aroma and I was on my way to the coffee tasting. It misses a point from me as it was quite light on our palates which might just be a personal preference thing.

Iced Caramel Latte

Iced Caramel Latte

And if black coffee isn’t your thing, we tried the Iced Caramel Latte which I find it surprisingly awesome! I’ve never had good experience with Caramel Latte as they are either too strong on coffee with faint caramel which kind of defeat the purpose of calling it a Caramel Latte right? Or too sweet which just hides the coffee taste altogether.

What sets apart this beverage from the others is its amazing balance between caramel and coffee. You get the kick of the coffee and sweet smiling caramel both on your palate. Definitely two thumbs up from me and Ain (she is slowly converting to a coffee drinker, yay!).

A part of me is trying to keep this cafe in my confidential file so as to not overcrowd it  but hey, you can’t keep the good things all to yourself right? So here goes:
